Various Methods of Creating Sculpture

Various Methods of Creating Sculpture

A sculptor really functions as a designer and as a craftsman where a designer is creating an artifact with imagination and expressiveness and a craftsman doing the execution of these ideas into creative works. So, a sculpture is a combination of creativeness, imagination, and expressiveness.

The beauty of the sculptures depend on the material that can be molded by the artist. Clay, wood, and metals are normally used for sculpture creation. The main methods to create sculptures are:

Carving

Features of carving are same for all the type of materials. It starts from the solid mass of the material and reduces into the desired form. When a sculpture is raised in the artist's mind, he starts to plan for it where he works progressively on that and finally forms the real sculpture.

There are two types of carving; direct and indirect. Wooden sculptures are created through indirect methods where the nature itself makes changes on the woods or stones due to the natural changes.

Direct carving is done by different tools by changing a select wood, stone or metal into a desirable form. The structure of the wood and stone is depended on the tools to be used.

Modeling

In the reduction of carving method modeling is essential. Various types of  materials are used for modeling. Clay, wax, plastic, concrete, and wood are used for modeling now. The main idea of modeling is the self setting property of the materials.

Clay is famous for creating positive sculptures. Wooden sculptures are moulded in special situations. Most of the time, alteration is made in wooden sculptures by painting with better finishes.

Solid modeling materials are used to make metal sculptures. Fiberglass and concrete sculptures are used to make plaster molds that are perfectly from the original.

Assembling

Assembling is done by combining many finished parts. Assembling is otherwise known as Constructing that is done by various materials like metal rods, plates, tubes, and sheets. Different techniques are used to join these component parts.

These sculptures are preserved in various museums and also kept for sales in different sculpture shops. Gallery of many sculptures is still being amazed in various places.
